July 5, 2019 marks the start of a new season of “Incontri d’alt(r)a quota” (Other High Altitude Encounters): a programme organised by the UNESCO Dolomites Foundation and based at mountain huts. The first event will be at Rifugio Berti in Vallon Popera, Comelico Superiore, and will focus on the work of producers in the UNESCO Dolomites and the culinary alchemy of chef Alessandro Gilmozzi.
Unique ingredients, like the Dolomites
The chef is a supporter of the UNESCO Dolomites Foundation, and known throughout the region for his expert use of wild herbs in cooking. Those wishing to take part in the event will need to register by July 2nd at: press@dolomitiunesco.info. Participants will meet at the Lunelli mountain hut at 9.30 a.m. and then walk up to Rifugio Berti in the company of the chef, who will explain the properties of the various herbs seen along the way. Bruno Martini and Rita Zandonella have managed this mountain hut with great skill and dedication for forty-two years, and will be there to welcome the participants keen to sample the chef’s creations. The event will feature farm products, cheeses, honey and liqueurs supplied by producers from the UNESCO Dolomites quality network. Wild herbs, regional products, and the warm hospitality of Bruno and Rita will therefore be the main ingredients in a day focused on the appreciation of excellent mountain products.
Other events
The second of the “Incontri d’alt(r)a quota” will be the “Brenta Open” on Saturday 27 July. After an overnight stay at the Agostini Mountain Hut, a group of youngsters with disabilities will set off to climb various peaks, accompanied by Gianluigi Rosa, Kevin Ferrari and Michele Maggioni. To underline the focus of this initiative on overcoming physical barriers and bars to communication, a group of musicians will create a triangular soundscape between the mountains and the Mountain Hut. The next event will be on August 31st at the Pian de Fontana Mountain Hut in the Bellunesi Dolomites National Park, with a photographic workshop led by Moreno Geremetta. Then, on September 7th, the Cava Buscada Mountain Hut, together with MUSE and the Friulian Dolomites Natural Park, are organising a walk through the history of the earth, exploring the quarry and the garden of the ammonites. Finally, on September 21st, at the Pradidali Mountain Hut, writer Matteo Melchiorre and double-bass player Nelso Salton will accompany participants on a walk under the cliffs of the Pale di San Martino mountain group.
