The #FossilSeaChallenge: a competition for schools. Read about the previous editions.

The Province of Trento, in the context of activities of the Geological Heritage and Education and Scientific Research Networks of the UNESCO Dolomites Foundation, shares and promotes awareness of the extraordinary geological value of the Dolomites, and a gift from nature. The #FossilSeaChallenge aims to support learning about the World Heritage Site through a challenge for secondary school classes in the areas within the Dolomites UNESCO Site. Participants can take on small projects for experimental scientific research, technical and scientific work or the sharing of information on geological topics relevant to the Dolomites.

The #FossilSeaChallenge: competition aims

The competition is intended to involve secondary-school students in the regions of the Dolomites UNESCO Property (Region of Veneto, Autonomous Province of Bolzano – South Tyrol, Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia and Autonomous Province of Trento), in devising and developing small projects for experimental technical and scientific research or for sharing information on geological topics relevant to the UNESCO Dolomites.

Various types of projects are possible: scientific work (experimental or based on existing material), but also projects to share scientific knowledge in the form of video content, cartoons, etc., also using innovative IT tools, boards, pathways, environmental monitoring projects, and more.

Participants

The #FossilSeaChallenge is run by the UNESCO Dolomites Foundation and the Autonomous Province of Trento – Department of Infrastructure and Environment and Department of Universities and Research, Youth Policy, Equal Opportunities and Cooperation for Development.

It also benefits from the collaboration of MUSE – the Trento Science Museum, the Predazzo Dolomites Geological Museum, the University of Trento and the Department of Institutional and Legislative Affairs of the Autonomous Province of Trento, in its capacity as coordinator of the Education and Scientific Research Network and Geological Heritage Network of the UNESCO Dolomites Foundation.

The #FossilSeaChallenge initiative has signed up secondary schools from the areas within the Dolomites World Heritage Site over three different editions, each with a specific theme for students to focus their projects on.

First edition

academic year 2017/2018

The Dolomites and their relationship with water: a constant in the history of the Dolomites, involved in the processes for formation of the rocks, diagenetic processes, shaping of the carbonate materials and nearby valleys, through to the modern age, where it still has a fundamental role in evolution of the “skyline” of these mountains.

Winner: joint winners were the Istituto Don Bosco in Pordenone with its project “Water: an in(?)exhaustible source of inspiration” and Istituto la Rosa Bianca in Cavalese (Province of Trento) with the project “OpenFossilContent4Kids”.

Second edition

academic year 2018/2019

The Dolomites and their relationship with fire: today, “fire” is stored within the rocks with their striking coloration. Shades of red, green and black evoke this element force, contrasting with the pale sedimentary limestone, and evidence of the magmatic history that has heavily impacted the landscape of the Dolomites.

Winner: Liceo Galilei in Trento with the project “Enrosadira: fire, time and life”. A special mention went to Liceo Madonna del Grappa in Treviso for their project “Dolomagma” for its active involvement of students in the younger classes.

Third edition

academic year 2019/2020

The Dolomites and Time: UNESCO status not only regards the geological value of the Dolomites but also the landscapes created through interaction between nature and man, who has learned to live in and coexist with this environment. The vast divergence between the human time scale, whether individual or historical, and geological time, opens the doors to endless reflections and possible interpretative and multidisciplinary projects.
